Tragedy on the Border: Smuggler Shot Dead
On Saturday night, tragedy struck on the border between Belarus and Lithuania as a smuggler was shot dead. The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported this incident on their official website.
Border guards from the Vilnius border unit received a tip about smuggling near the village of Paudrionys, close to the Belarusian border. While on duty, they encountered a VW Passat that refused to stop when asked, instead trying to flee from the guards. A truck was quickly dispatched to chase the vehicle.
During the pursuit, the driver of the car attempted to hit a border guard who was on foot on the road. Fortunately, the officer managed to avoid the collision. Fearing for their lives and the safety of nearby residents, the border guard fired a single shot at the car’s tire in an attempt to stop the dangerous fugitive. The car eventually came to a halt, and inside was found a Lithuanian citizen who had been fatally wounded.
Investigations revealed packs of cigarettes, believed to be contraband, inside the vehicle. The police have since launched a formal investigation into the incident.
