The Academy of Sciences Urges President Zelensky to Veto the Bill Canceling Daylight Saving Time
The Academy of Sciences of the Higher School has called on the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to veto the bill 4201 on the cancellation of the switch to daylight saving time, which was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 16.
Scientists Disagree with the Decision
According to this law, Ukraine cancels the transitions to daylight saving time. However, scientists disagree with this decision.
The head of the Academy, Oleksandr Nakonechny, explained using the example of Kyiv that according to the new law, in late June the sun will rise at 3 am in the capital, and dusk will fall at 8 pm. Currently, the time indicators are 4 and 9 pm, respectively.
Scientists argue that the abolition of daylight saving time will lead to an increase in electricity costs in the evenings in the spring, summer, and autumn months, which may lead to power outages. They also note that the morning sunlight will be wasted.
«In this regard, we believe that the next logical step that can regulate this situation will be the introduction of flexible working hours in different regions of the country. This will help mitigate the negative consequences that may arise from the cancellation of daylight saving time,» the scientists said in their appeal.
They also pointed out that many countries around the world continue to practice switching clocks forward one hour in the summer. For example, this applies to almost all states in the United States, provinces in Canada, the United Kingdom, and all EU countries. While countries like Russia, Belarus, and China, which have authoritarian regimes, have abandoned daylight saving time.
