Colombian President Cuts Ties with Israel over Gaza Conflict
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel in light of the recent tensions in the Gaza Strip. The decision was made on Wednesday, May 1, in response to the escalation of the conflict between the two countries.
This information is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a statement from AP agency.
Petro once again accused Israel of «genocide» due to its military operation in the Gaza Strip. Earlier, he had suspended the purchase of weapons from Israel and compared its actions to those of Nazi Germany.
«Tomorrow (May 2), diplomatic relations with the State of Israel will be severed… because they have a president-genocider. If Palestine dies, humanity dies, and we will not allow it to die,» Petro declared.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz responded to Petro’s statements on social media.
«History will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to stand on the side of the most despicable monsters known to humanity, who burned babies, killed children, raped women, and kidnapped innocent civilians,» Katz wrote.
However, he emphasized that relations between Israel and Colombia have always been warm, and the president’s antisemitic statements will not change this fact.
