Exploring Cotton Cultivation in the Odessa Region

Recently, the words «cotton» or «бавовна» «хлопок» have been appearing more often in ironic news about explosions at Russian factories or power stations. However, cotton growing is a serious and beneficial industry that can become an important part of life in the Odessa region. Farmers and industry experts discussed the prospects of growing cotton in our warm southern regions in Odessa.

Promising Regions for Cotton Growing

This business is considered most promising in the Izmail, Kiliya, and Tatarbunar regions of the Odessa region, where the climate fully meets the requirements of this heat-loving plant. This conclusion was made by participants of a scientific seminar held at the Odessa State Agrarian University.

Research and Developments

The Ukrainian Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences has long been conducting research on cotton cultivation in experimental fields. According to senior research fellow of the institute, Yuriy Stepanov, the yield of cotton in these farms reached three tons per hectare.

«The institute has been working with this crop and has developed early-maturing varieties of cotton that demonstrate excellent results. We are ready to continue testing new varieties in new climate conditions. The results of our research on cultivation techniques are essential for introducing cotton in the southern regions of the Odessa region,» Stepanov noted.
