Germany Urges Global Support for Ukraine’s Air Defense
Germany has sent letters to dozens of countries urging them to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, according to the Financial Times, citing information from RBC-Ukraine.
The German government has sent letters to dozens of countries, including Arab states in the Persian Gulf, asking them to expand the network of air defense systems in Ukraine.
In the letter, Germany stated that Kyiv needs immediate assistance to protect its cities, military facilities, and critical infrastructure from the «lethal pressure» of Russian missiles.
Global Initiative Launched by Germany
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that they are launching a global initiative to fill the gaps in Ukraine’s air defense and have reached out to a «broad range of partners who are not members of NATO.»
Air defense has become crucial for Ukraine due to increasing Russian attacks on its territory. As a result, the authorities have started actively discussing the strengthening of air defense systems to protect cities and infrastructure.
Germany’s Support for Ukraine
In response, Germany has decided to help Ukraine by providing additional Patriot systems. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that 25 Patriot systems are needed for complete protection, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba pointed out that there are around 100 available Patriot systems worldwide that could be transferred to Ukraine.
It is worth noting that Ukraine is interested not only in Patriot systems but also in Samp-T systems, which are also capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. Negotiations are ongoing to receive two Patriot batteries and one Samp-T battery.
