Threat to Metro Tunnels in Kyiv

There is a real threat to the metro tunnels at Poshtova Square and Volodymyrska Hill in Kyiv due to the rising level of groundwater and the dangerous condition of the underground pit, which contains historical artifacts. This was reported by Kyiv City Council deputy Andrii Vitrenko during a field meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on the capital regarding the emergency state of the underground pit at Poshtova.

According to him, visually the pit looks terrible, with temporary fences that are collapsing. The underground pit contains artifacts from the 11th century, such as a customs house, trade storehouses, and ancient streets, which require urgent intervention due to the threat of collapsing retaining walls and a general landslide.

Metro Tunnels at Risk

As for the metro, representatives of the transport department and the municipal enterprise «Kyiv Metro» claim that there is no threat to the metro tunnels, but scientific studies confirm that the absence of drainage systems could pose a threat to the tunnels. This is reminiscent of the events at Demiivska metro station, where problems also arose due to the instability of the ground and insufficient drainage system.
