Mexico Cancels Plans to Reduce Import of Yellow Corn

Mexico’s Minister of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, has announced the cancellation of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s plans to reduce the import of yellow corn. This information was reported by APK-Inform.

According to the minister, the new government of the country will instead focus on achieving self-sufficiency in the production of white corn. The former President of Mexico intended to sharply reduce the import of yellow corn, the main volumes of which come from the United States, in favor of developing domestic grain production. However, during his administration, it was not possible to reduce the annual import of yellow corn to the planned level of 6 billion dollars. Such a policy also limited the use of GM corn and led to trade disputes with the United States.

Thus, Mexico is likely to continue importing significant volumes of yellow corn due to the growing demand in the livestock sector.
