The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that unwanted calls created using artificial intelligence are illegal. They pose serious risks of spreading misinformation and fraud. The decision was made citing a law passed thirty years ago aimed at combating unwanted phone calls.

This information is reported by The New York Times. According to data presented by journalists, AI-generated spam is also considered illegal.

«Criminals are using voices generated by artificial intelligence in unwanted robocalls to demand money from vulnerable family members, impersonate celebrities, and misinform voters,» noted FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel.

Recently, AI has even been used for political spam. In the United States, there was a case where residents of New Hampshire received a call from a «voice clone» of President Joe Biden. The fake voice of the president urged people not to participate in the Democratic Party primaries. The state’s attorney general pointed out that the criminals were trying to suppress voters’ will through this method. This call was deemed illegal according to U.S. law.
