Summer is traditionally a time for vacations and children’s holidays, but this year several cities in Ukraine have decided to start the school year in August. The Ministry of Education has provided recommendations for the start of classes in higher educational institutions, but individual schools are experimenting on their own.

In Lviv, for example, Mayor Andriy Sadoviy announced that this year classes will begin on August 19. The city’s schools will serve as emergency shelters in case of a power outage. Chernivtsi has also chosen the same date for the start of classes, while Ivano-Frankivsk is still finalizing their plans.

The Law of Ukraine «On Education» defines September 1 as the official start date for classes in most regions. However, Odessa, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Rivne, and Lutsk are sticking to the usual schedule, with Cherkasy even considering the possibility of canceling holidays.
